FAQs

  • Will you accept my insurance?
    •  Cornerstone Counseling of Ashland, LLC and its therapists work with several insurance companies and EAP’s. We strongly recommend that you check with your insurance company first and/or call us.  We can help you determine whether or not we are on your panel.
Even if we're not on your insurance panel, many insurance companies have "out-of-network" benefits that can be utilized.
    • We are currently participating with Medicare, Medical Mutual, Anthem BC/BS, United Behavioral Health, Aetna, Magellan, Ohio Health Choice, Summa Care, Humana Military and CareSource.
  • How much does counseling cost?

The first initial visit is $150 and all visits afterward are $120. Your out-of-pocket fees will vary based on your insurance benefits.

  • How often will we meet?

Usually, counselors like to see our clients every week or every two weeks to begin with. When too much time elapses between appointments, progress is often noticeably slower and momentum is lost. It all depends on what you and your counselor are comfortable with.   Counseling sessions typically run 50 minutes.

  • How long does therapy last?
The course of therapy varies from person to person. Sometimes people achieve their goals in just a few months, while in other cases it may take a year or longer to complete our work. Factors influencing the duration include the nature and complexity of the issues we're addressing, your life circumstances, your motivation, and many other variables.
  • Will I always see the same counselor?
Yes, typically you will see the same counselor each time.

Some reasons you might see a different counselor:
If you are not comfortable with the counselor with whom we schedule you, we can try to reschedule you with someone new.
In an emergency situation, a different counselor might be available right away.
If your insurance changes, you may need to switch to a different counselor who is in the new insurance network.
  • Can you assure me that my privacy will be protected?
We are very sensitive to people's concerns about privacy and confidentiality. We are aware that people run into each other at local events or other places outside the therapy office. To respect your privacy, we may not greet you or act as if we know you, unless you initiate the contact.
  • What about confidentiality?
You have a legal right to the confidentiality of what we discuss in our sessions, and even to the fact that you are in therapy with us, unless you give us written permission to disclose that information (for example, to your medical doctor). We are required to safeguard that confidentiality. There are, however, some legal exceptions: We are required to notify the authorities if we have cause to suspect that a minor (under age 18) has been abused or neglected. We are required to notify an emergency party in the event that we are concerned about your safety or the safety of someone else. We also must contact the authorities if we have reasonable cause to believe that abuse or neglect of an elderly or disabled person has occurred. If you are involved in a legal proceeding, a judge may order us to disclose information related to your treatment.
  • What do LPC, LPCC, and LISW stand for? What does -S Mean?

LPC: Licensed Professional Counselor LPCC: Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor LISW: Licensed Independent Social Worker -S: Supervisory Credentials This independently licensed professional can supervise other counselors. Special training is required.

  • Does being in therapy mean there's something wrong with me or that I have a mental illness?
We see people who come to therapy as strong, courageous and motivated to work on what is distressing to them. It is a privilege to work with you on your journey toward healing.
  • What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.  This form of therapy is a powerful therapy approach that helps relieve many types of psychological distress.  We have seven counselors trained in EMDR therapy and we have helped people manage symptoms and overcome PTSD, panic attacks, Depression, Addiction, pain and much more.   For a more detailed description, go to www.emdria.org.   Call and set up a time to speak to one of our trained counselors and see how this might help you overcome the distress that is holding you back from living a full life.

  • Can counselors make custody recommendations?

Our role at Cornerstone is not as a custody counselor.  We would be there to help you and/or your child with emotional and relational issues surrounding the divorce.  As a treating therapist, Our Professional Clinical Counselor license mandates that we can make no recommendations for custody, visitation or assessment of parenting and we are limited in what we can share with the court.  Because we do not evaluate both parents, we ethically cannot state an objective opinion about custody.

  • What are the court fees and our guidelines for legal appearances/ communication?

Clients are discouraged from having their counselor or their child's counselor subpoenaed.  Even though you are responsible for the fees, it does not mean that the testimony would be entirely in your favor.  We can make no recommendations for custody.  We ask that you give us at least two weeks notice to plan.  Due to the extra time and preparation that has to go into court preparations, the fees are as follows:

Case preparation:  $125 per hour for case preparation, case review and communication with any legal parties.  This includes time it takes to prepare a letter for court.

Court appearance:  For a court appearance, counselors must set aside a minimum block of time of four hours.  ($125 X 4 hours =$500).  At least half of the fee needs paid prior to court appearance.   These fees cannot be billed to medical insurance.

  • Do you accept Medicaid?
